DIETERICH -- Effingham St. Anthony opened the girls high school basketball season with a 61-36 victory over Dieterich Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs didn't mess around, jumping out to a 22-7 opening quarter lead. Stacie Vonderheide knocked in two three-pointers and three regular baskets in that quarter for 12 points. Nancy Ruholl added two three-pointers and two free throws for six points.

The offense calmed down in the second quarter. St. Anthony held a 29-16 halftime lead.

Dieterich came back in the third period to outscore the Bulldogs by a 14-13 count. Miley Britton led the way for the Movin' Maroons with seven points.

St. Anthony's Vonderhiede then went on another roll, finishing the final quarter with seven points on four baskets and a free throw as the Bulldogs had a 19-6 run.

Addi Nuxoll added five points in the quarter for St. Anthony.

Vonderheide finished with 27 points on 12 field goals that included two three-pointers. She was one of two at the line. Also in double figures was Ruholl with 16 points on five field goals, two of those from three-point range, and four of eight at the line.

Dieterich was led by Britton with 12 points. She hit five field goals, two of those three-pointers.

At Altamont

Atlamont easily handled Vandalia to the tune of 84-36 in Tuesday action.

The Indians ran out to an 18-6 opening quarter lead as Grace Nelson scored five points while Kaylee Lurkins and Brianna Grunloh tallied four each.

Altamont then had a 33-16 second quarter run to lead 51-22 at halftime. Nelson connected on four baskets that included a three-pointer and was four of four at the line for 13 points. Skylie Klein hit two three-pointers and Libby Reardon one.

The Indians had a 22-10 third quarter as Nelson added eight more points and Claire Boehm and Lurkins had four each.

Nelson finished with 28 points on 11 field goals, two from three-point range, and five of five at the line. Lurkins scored 12 points and Boehm added 10.

Vandalia finished with seven three-pointers by five different players  in the game. Lupton and Lamonica led the way with two each. Lupton tallied 14 points for the Vandals.

Altamont was also a winner in junior varsity action, 44-21.

At Newton

Newton had a big-scoring third quarter in taking a 42-21 victory over Fairfield Tuesday evening.

The Eagles edged out to a 9-4 opening quarter lead and led 12-7 at halftime. Newton then went on a 19-6 third quarter run.

Camryn Martin led the way for Newton with 16 points while Karasyn Martin added nine. Leading the way in rebounds was Lilly Kessler with 12. K. Martin pulled down eight.

Elley Bennett and K. Martin had four assists each. Bennett led in steals with three. Kessler had two blocked shots.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity win, 34-25 in overtime. The Eagles scored 11 points in the overtime period.

Probst led the way with 12 points while Hermann added 11 for the Eagles.

At Cerro Gordo

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened the girls basketball season with a 44-38 win over Cerro Gordo Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets stepped out to a 16-10 opening quarter lead as Kendra Hayes scored seven points on two regular baskets and a three-pointer. Ella Kinkelaar connected on a basket and was three of three at the line for five points.

The lead went to 23-15 at halftime. Kinkelaar added four more points.

The scoring slowed down for the Hatchets in the third quarter as Cerro Gordo had a 10-7 run to pull within 30-25. But WSS got back on track with a 14-13 final period. Samantha Hayes scored three baskets and Ellie Wittenberg hit a three-pointer.

K. Hayes led the way with 11 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of four at the line. Also in double figures was S. Hayes with five baskets for 10 points.

 At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) tallied a victory over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals were 46-28 winners in their season opener.

North Clay will be back in action Thursday at South Central.

 

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis played host to Mount Vernon and fell to the Rams, 69-52 Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes trailed Mount Vernon 19-14 after the opening quarter. Chloe Probst kept the Shoes within striking distance by hitting two three-pointers, a regular basket and a free throw for nine points. Anna Probst connected on a three-pointer.

Moutn Vernon held a 38-30 halftime lead as Pollard scored 10 of her team's points.

The Rams then put the game away with a 17-7 third quarter run as Johnson took over the scoring duties with nine points.

T-town had a 15-12 final quarter.

A. Probst led the way with 15 points on six field goals, two from three-point range, and one free throw. Mollie Ruholl added 11 points on four field goals, three of those from trifecta range. M. Ruholl led in rebounds with six while C. Probst and A. Probst had five each. Kelsey Niemerg led in steals with five and assists with four.

At Casey

Casey-Westfield hosted South Central and sent the Cougars home with a 55-39 loss Tuesday.

The Warriors ripped out to a 19-7 opening quarter lead and led 22-11 at halftime and by 10 heading into the final quarter.

South Central had one player in double figures. Taegan Webster led the way with 21 points on seven field goals, three of those from three-point range, and four of eight at the line.

At Casey
