Richard J. “Dick” Kabbes, 83, of Effingham, IL, passed away at 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL with family by his side.
Due to the increasing cases of COVID-19 in the area, Dick’s family has decided to have a private family mass instead of public services. Cards and memorial donations may be mailed to Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. 4th St, Effingham, IL 62401. The family thanks you for your understanding and encourages you to remember Dick in your own way.
A private family mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham with military rites. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Richard was born on June 17, 1937, in Effingham, IL, the son of Allie and Agnes (Worman) Kabbes. Dick served as a Marine in the United States Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton and 29 Palms in California. After his military service he returned home to work at Effingham Asphalt Company where he was still a co-owner today. He also served as President of Tuscola Stone Company in Tuscola, IL for many years. On January 23, 1960, he married Carolyn Fisher at Sacred Heart Church in Effingham. Dick was also a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham Knights of Columbus Council 665, St. Anthony Sportsbackers, and the Effingham Elks Lodge 1016.
Dick is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kabbes of Effingham; six children, Sherri (Tony) Sandschafer, Lynn (Bruce) Kowalski, Kay (Clint) Spruell, Jill (Jim) Williams, Laura (Ted) Koester, and Kurt (Jenny) Kabbes all of Effingham; grandchildren, Brent (Holly) Sandschafer, Brock (Britney) Sandschafer, Ryan Sandschafer, Carrie (Luke) Bloemer, Jay (Anna) Kowalski, Kory Kowalski, Shelby (Matt) Dasenbrock, Chelsey (Jake) Koester, Landon, Neil, and Seth Williams, Paige, Evan, and Lanae Koester, and Sophie, Morgan and Tucker Kabbes; great-grandchildren, Cora Dasenbrock, and Vayda and Brynn Bloemer; sister-in-law, Jane Kabbes; brothers-in-law, Bob Hoene, and Bob (Norma) Fisher; and dear friend, Ralph Seiler.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Mary Agnes; parents, Allie and Agnes Kabbes; brother, Jack Kabbes; and sister, Mary Hoene.
