A child was injured in the opening race Sunday at the 79th Effingham County Fair at Altamont.

The starting gate ended up going into the first row of the grandstand, and struck the child. The girl, who is related to several people connected with racing at the fair, was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, then was airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital. The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident and a press release is expected later this morning.

Today's racing at the fair has been canceled. Fair Board President Phil Hartke said a decision will be made by noon today as to whether there will be any more racing at the fair this week.
