Work is underway on the long-awaited rebuild of Fayette Avenue through Effingham.
The plan is to reconstruct and widen the major artery through the city, carrying 19,000 vehicles per day. Phase 1 is to improve Fayette from Illini Drive east to Walnut Street. Phase 2 will involve a reconstruction from Banker Street east to Long Street.
The total cost of the project is to come in at just under $66 million.
The phrase "long-awaited" is appropriate, since planning on the project began in 2006, with design approval reached in 2012. Passage of the "Rebuild Illinois" bill in 2019 finally provided the funding for the project.
