A Stewardson man was sentenced Thursday to 26 years in prison for attempted murder.

23-year-old Chance Evans was found guilty in November at a bench trial. Evans was convicted following an incident in April of 2022 when Evans reportedly fired a shot from a revolver at an Effingham resident after a verbal confrontation. Evans and the Effingham man had a longstanding dispute. The testimony at trial indicated that both men were in vehicles traveling along the Mode Road when the incident occurred, and that there were other people in both vehicles when the weapon discharged.

In imposing sentence, Judge Amanda Ade-Harlow gave Evans the minimum six-year term, but circumstances added another 20 years to the sentence. He also received three years' mandatory supervised release once out of prison.

Evans had also been found guilty at trial of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was sentenced to one year in prison for that offense, plus up to a year of mandatory supervised release once out of prison.
