(DR. CARMEN AYALA)
Illinois State Superintendent of Education Dr. Carmen Ayala has announced plans to retire at the end of her current contract, which concludes January 31, 2023.
Ayala has served as state superintendent since early 2019. She is the first woman and first person of color to serve as permanent superintendent for the Illinois State Board of Education.
Ayala oversaw Illinois schools through COVID-19, and became a defendant in a number of lawsuits brought by individuals and school districts due largely to masking requirements.
