Altamont city council members Monday approved a new plan for upgrading sewer service in the northwest section of the city.

The plan had been to line the existing sewer mains, but the decision has been changed to remove and replace the mains. This was the original plan for the project, with Kieffer Brothers Construction of Mt. Carmel to do the work for $651,562.05.

The Council also approved an advertising sign permit agreement for Gilbert Park. Advertising signs will be permitted on the ball diamond fences, eight on each of the four fields. The ad revenue will be set aside to pay for improvements at the park.

The Altamont council amended the water rate. The minimum rate will be charged for up to 1,000 gallons per month. The rate for usage above the minimum will go to .011 cents per gallon, up from .01. As an example, a use of 2,500 gallons would cost an additional $1.30.

The Council approved an agreement with KNR Wireless. The City will provide space for an antenna on the water tower in exchange for free wireless service by KNR by the City.

It's insurance time, and the Altamont Council decided to stay with the Illinois Municipal League Risk Management for $122,239.79.

The Council also approved an agreement for engineering services with Milano and Grunloh of Effingham for replacement of sidewalk along 3rd Street from Altamont Pharmacy to the Sarah Bush Lincoln facility, and agreed to request up to $67,000 in Motor Fuel Tax funds to pay for the work.
