Reports of a plane crash south of Effingham Wednesday evening turned out to be inaccurate.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Department received an initial call that a plane had gone down near Interstate 57 at mile marker 144, about a mile south of Edgewood.

Edgewood's Fire Department was dispatched and searched the area. Additional personnel helped in the search, but no indication of a crash was found.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Department told us that it's believed a crop duster was flying very low in the area, and that a passerby on the Interstate thought the aircraft was going down.

Police and fire personnel cleared the area just after 9 pm.
