A second fatality has occurred due to the collision involving four Central A&M High School students last week.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed the death of 15-year-old Keegan Virden of Henton. The coroner reported Virden was brought in by EMS after sustaining multiple blunt force injuries in a motor vehicle collision. He was pronounced dead at 2:01pm Friday at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
Virden's death followed that of 16-year-old Conner James Rowcliff, who was the driver of the vehicle containing the four students. Illinois State Police report the car driven by Rowcliff was stopped at a stop sign on Leafland Street at US Route 51 at Assumption last Tuesday. For unknown reasons, Rowcliff pulled into the intersection and his car was struck by a southbound straight truck.
The St. Louis City Coroner reported Rowcliff's death on Thursday. He had died on Tuesday at St. Louis Children's Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.
Two other students, 14-year-olds from Assumption, were also injured. One was airlifted for treatment of life threatening injuries, the other was taken by ground ambulance for treatment of serious injuries.
