A collision that resulted in a fire occurred shortly before noon Thursday on I-70 westbound west of Effingham.
Illinois State Police report a pickup truck towing a car on a double-axle trailer was westbound halfway between Effingham and Altamont at 11:43am. Police report the driver, 56-year-old Gregory Faughn, attempted to make an abrupt left U-turn at the emergency turnaround. As Faughn's power unit was partially into the emergency turnaround, a SUV driven by 50-year-old Valerie Williams struck the rear driver side of Faughn's trailer. Williams' SUV came to a stop on the roadway and became engulfed in flames. Williams was able to exit the vehicle. The car being towed by Faughn overturned onto the roadway.
Williams was airlifted from the scene and taken to Carle Hospital in Urbana for treatment.
Faughn was cited for improper lane usage when he violated the median.
