Effingham City Council members Wednesday voted to commit local funds toward a grant request that could help pay for infrastructure work.

The Council, at a special noon hour meeting, agreed to seek a $550,000 grant and committed a local match of $141,935. The local funding is in this fiscal year's budget.

The project is identified as sewer lining work. Sewer lining is often an option to replacing sewer mains. City Engineer Luke Thoele said the grant funds, if received, would be used generally in the downtown area.

The City should learn whether the grant is approved by year's end.
