The return of the Effingham County Relay for Life was a success.
Friday night's event featured good music, good food and a good feeling about eventually beating cancer.
One bit of good news came even before Relay began, as the $60,000 goal was exceeded the day before the event.

Longtime Relay leader Ron Mietzner was a surprise honoree with the Cheryl Boone Award for his service. It was a surprise since Mietzner thought the award had been retired, but Relay leader Becky Kinman had other ideas.
Highlights of the evening included music by Brooke Rupel and the band "Rabbit in Red', along with the Survivors Lap and the Luminaria Lap, and the survivor speaker Scott Repking.

Relay, like many other events, is working its way back after being curtailed last year to a drive-thru luminaria event, but the success seen this year helped organizers see that there is still support for the fundraiser.
