An Effingham resident has been found unfit to stand trial on counts of arson and burglary.
33-year-old Jerome Wagnon was arrested in February after he was found inside the Crossroads Bank building on North Keller Drive. An alarm just before 4am led police to the bank where they found Wagnon inside. Glass had been broken to gain entry. City police chief Jason McFarland said at the time it appeared Wagnon attempted to gain access to the bank vault and when that proved unsuccessful, began damaging items inside the bank and appeared to be trying to start a fire.
In court Wednesday, Judge Christopher Matoush utilized findings from a report by psychologist Dr. Jerry Boyd to determine that Wagnon is unfit to stand trial but has a substantial chance of regaining fitness within a year.
The case will be in court on June 3 for a status hearing.
