A local man has been arrested on counts of endangering the life or health of a child and reckless conduct. The arrest followed the man's involvement in a car crash Saturday morning.
Effingham city police responded to a two-vehicle crash at Henrietta and Fayette just after 8am. No injuries were reported, but one of the drivers, 34-year-old Jared H. Kerr of Effingham, was cited for DUI drugs, failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash, and disobeying a traffic control device.
Police report later Saturday morning, it was determined that Kerr left his three-year-old child at his residence unattended. The child was found safe and was turned over to family members, and the additional charges were filed. The matter was then referred to DCFS for further investigation.
Police Chief Jason McFarland said he appreciated the team effort and timely response of everyone involved in quickly resolving the issue and returning the child to safety.
