Effingham County Board members Tuesday passed two resolutions, one regarding culturally responsive teaching, and the other concerning the criminal justice reform bill.

The culturally responsive teaching measure comes from the Illinois Board of Education. County Board Chairman Jim Niemann said board members feel the measure presses for things that the majority of county residents don't support. The Illinois Joint Committee on Administrative Rules is to vote on the measure Wednesday after the vote was postponed for a day.

The other measure is the criminal justice reform bill that was passed in the fall veto session of the General Assembly.

The Board set the lease price for space for Congressman Mary Miller in the County Office Building at $850/month for two years. Also approved was a payroll deduction plan to support the Shop With A Deputy program to be overseen by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #300.

Board members approved a bridge aid petition for a project in Summit Township, and purchased property from Robert and Barbara Beck.

Niemann reported that the Board is to receive the report this week from Hearing Officer Larry Clark on the proposed landfill east of Effingham. The Board will deliberate in closed session in a jury-like setting before voting in open session whether to approve the landfill siting. If the Board approved the siting, the matter goes to the Illinois EPA.

Board Vice-Chairman Dave Campbell reported the County has about $30,000 available in revolving loan funds for new or expanding businesses.
