An Illinois State Trooper was struck by a vehicle on the north side of Effingham Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred at 7:25am on the ramp from US Route 45 to Interstate 57 South/Interstate 70 West.
State police report that the Trooper was on the right shoulder with his squad car's emergency lights activated, parked behind a truck-tractor semi-trailer, while investigating a traffic crash. The Trooper was gathering information from the semi involved in an earlier hit-and-run. The Trooper was on the driver's side external floorboard of the semi's cab partially in the vehicle, when the passing semi struck the Trooper and the cab of the stopped semi.
The Trooper was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and has since been treated and released. The driver of the passing semi, 42-year-old Eric D. Trevino of Temple Bell, Texas, was cited for a violation of Scott's Law, improper passing of a stationary emergency vehicle.
About a half-hour after the incident in Effingham, two construction workers were killed while setting barrels for a construction zone at the Mississippi River. A car struck one of the barrels, then struck the workers, killing them both. The driver incurred minor injuries.
There have been 19 Illinois State Police squad cars struck in relation to the Move Over Law and eight Troopers have sustained injuries from Move Over Law-related crashes.
